Born in New York City, Steve Butts sings bass and is the 5-string banjo player for The Highwaymen, playing a Gibson Mastertone flattop with a custom neck by John D'Angelico. He also plays guitar, recorders and occasionally a baroque oboe with the group. |
Since the group disbanded in 1964, Steve's "day job" has been as an academic administrator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Grinnell College and Lawrence University. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and has taught statistics and baroque music performance at Columbia and the Lawrence Conservatory (although not at the same time!). |

Since the 1980's, he has been an active participant in the early music movement, playing baroque music with singers and instrumentalists who specialize in the music of this time and who play on versions of instruments that were appropriate for the period. He is shown here at an Oberlin College master class warming up with a copy of a Stanesby 3-keyed oboe. |
