Johann Helton plays upright bass for the group and is the only non-original member, having joined the ensemble in 1991.


A resident of Boise, Idaho, Johann has made his life and living in music as a bassist, guitarist and sound engineer.

He is an alumnus of the University of Idaho, Boston College, Hochschule fuer musik und Darstellende kunst (Mozarteum) in Salzburg, Austria and the Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. He has served on the faculties of Albertson College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene University and Boise State University.

In addition to performing with The Highwaymen, Johann performs widely as a solo artist and has appeared with such artists and organizations as Luciano Pavarotti, the Boise Philharmonic, Richie Havens, Opera Idaho, the Warrior Poets and the Darkwood Consort. He has produced has four solo CD's of original acoustic, instrumental music, and has been referred to by the Idaho Statesman as "...one of Idaho's long-loved guitarists." He owns JoTown Records in Boise, the studio where The Highwaymen recorded "The Water of Life". To see more about Johann check out his website here.
